I graduated from Ohio State University, School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I moved after graduation to Colorado, wanting to be in the Southwest for its mountains and stunning physical beauty. My first job in nursing was in hospital cardiac telemetry, and for several years to follow coronary care and intensive care at the Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver.
Caring for so many critically ill patients, I became curious and interested in a preventive approach to health care and returned to university to earn a Master of Science in Public Health Nursing from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center in Denver. I enjoyed the public health arena and worked with the Colorado Migrant Health Program, US Indian Health Service, and New Mexico public schools.
Back to school for a post-graduate certification at the University of New Mexico, Family Nurse Practitioner Program, took me to rural New Mexico where I worked in a community clinic in Tierra Amarilla. Since then I have also worked with Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless Project, Santa Fe Family Health Center and most recently Bridges In Medicine. Working at Bridges was an opportunity to practice integrative medicine blended with comprehensive primary care for adults.
I continue to look for new opportunities for collaborating with individuals and communities in creating healthier lives. I draw on the rich and rewarding experience and skills acquired over the span of my nursing career to support others toward better physical, emotional and spiritual health. My passion for service to others is a commitment to clients and colleagues alike. I look forward to working with Dr. Reba Eagle and the Original Medicine staff, clients and community.
Yours, Donna Dowell, CFNP
